Hello BHM Community!
The situation in Haiti has grown increasingly dire, with escalating violence, airports closing, and political instability affecting millions of lives. However, with support with from folks like you, BHM remains open and we continue to stand as a source of hope amid the turmoil.
The Current Situation in Haiti
Gang violence now controls over 85% of Port-au-Prince, spreading fear and disruption across the capital and beyond. For example, 150 people were killed in the capital of Port-au-Prince over the past week, United Nations human rights chief Volker Turk said on Wednesday.
Violence like this has forced multiple NGOs to pull out of Haiti, such as Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who suspended operations following attacks on their staff and patients.
The challenges are not just violent but logistical. The UN-backed multinational force in Haiti, which aims to assist the Haitian police, is underfunded and understaffed, with only 430 of the planned 2,500 international officers deployed.
Meanwhile, political uncertainty continues as the nation struggles without a stable government to address these crises.
BHM’s Response: Hope and Healing Amid Crisis
Despite these immense challenges, Baptist Haiti Mission remains committed to serving the Haitian people.
- Our Hospital Remains Open: BHM’s hospital continues to provide essential medical care and has seen an uptick in hospital visits because many facilities are closed.
- 224 Schools in Operation: Despite the ongoing crisis, 224 BHM schools remain open, continuing to provide education and meals to thousands of children who rely on them.
- Many Churches Remain Open: While a few churches have closed, most churches remain open and continue to proclaim Christ’s love and care.
How to Pray
We ask for your prayers during this time of incredible challenge for Haiti. Please pray for:
- Peace to overcome the violence gripping the nation.
- Strength and safety for the people of Haiti and for those working tirelessly to support them. Some staff say they feel “stressed, panicked, confused, and down sometimes” because of the ongoing events.
- Guidance and provision for BHM as we continue to serve through medical care, education, and the Gospel.
A Final Word of Gratitude
Your continued support — whether through prayers, encouragement, or spreading awareness — enables us to keep going. It is through partnerships like yours that we can shine Christ’s light in the darkest moments.
Let us remember the promise of Psalm 140:12: “I know that the Lord secures justice for the poor and upholds the cause of the needy.”
Thank you for standing with us in prayer and faith.
In Christ,
